Upgrading Your Pipes

Getting That Hair Out Of Your Shower Drain

If your shower drain is open, but water is starting to collect as you bathe, you may have a clogged drain. Hair is often the main culprit, as it can bunch up and stick to soap scum in the drain. Here are some tips to help you clear the drain of hair.

Use a Wire Hanger

Purchase a cheap wire hanger that you can manipulate and snake down the drain. Before you do so, put on some disposable gloves so you can gather any hair that falls back into the tub. Some people may even want to wear a mask if they have a strong gag reflex or sense of smell.

Before you begin, straighten out the wire as much as possible. At the end of the wire, use needle-nose pliers to bend the tip slightly up into a small hook. This hook will help you pull more hair out and make sure the tip of the hanger doesn't scratch your tub.

Stick the hook down the drain and pull up as much hair as possible. Keep a trashcan nearby so you can easily dispose of the clog. The wire hanger may get rid of the entire clog. If it doesn't, you can try some DIY drain cleaners

Make a DIY Cleaner

While some products from the store can dissolve the hair easily, many of them are caustic. This means that their properties not only dissolve the hair, but they also break down your pipes as well. Instead, consider DIY cleaners made of vinegar and baking soda.

Pour about a half cup of baking soda down the drain and then a half cup of vinegar. These two ingredients create a chemical reaction that fizzes and breaks down hair. Let the chemicals sit for about twenty to thirty minutes. Then boil a pot of water and slowly pour it down the drain to flush the vinegar and baking soda. If both the hanger and DIY cleaners don't work, then you should contact a professional.

Call a Professional for Drain Cleaning

Plumbers can use strong chemicals that are safe for your drains but powerful enough to dissolve hair clogs. They can also use a plumbing snake and auger to fish for deep clogs. If your drain is clear of hair, you may have a drain issue that isn't as superficial. To discover the problem, they can do a video camera line inspection.

In the meantime, you can prevent future problems by using a mesh basket or filter above your drain. When the basket is full, simply dump the hair out in your trash can and rinse out the mesh. When you get hair on your hands from washing your hair, simply stick long pieces to the side of your shower tile. When you are done bathing, gather this hair and throw it away instead of letting it flow down the drain.
